Locksmith Guide

Most locks in this HON66 system have a stamped key code. U.S. codes begin with K, L, M, or N: K001–K999, L001–L999, M001–M999, and N001–N718.

For manual cutting, position 5 requires special attention. A master key normally uses depth 5; the valet function uses depth 2. The valet cut may control glove-box, rear-seat pass-through, trunk, or trunk lock-out operation when equipped. Positions 1–4 use split tumblers. Position 5 is one solid tumbler with two possible depths. Position 6 is always precut to depth 1.

Correct Depth for Position “A”

Code Series Range Depth for Position “A”
K001–K684, L349–M032, M697–N214 3
K685–L348, M033–M696, N215–N718 5

Recommended Ways to Make a Key

  1. Decode an accessible lock with a HON66 Lishi lock reader/decoder.
  2. Check the glove-box, trunk, or valet lock-out cylinder, if equipped, and use the stamped code to originate the key.
  3. If no easier source is available, remove the door-lock cylinder and read its stamped code or disassemble it to determine the cuts.
Locksmith note: Some glove-box covers are sealed, door-lock access may be time-consuming, and some glove boxes contain more tumblers than others.
